Description

This course is designed to introduce the artistic traditions of western culture from ancient times to middle ages. Students will examine the form, style, function, and meaning of important objects and monuments, including paintings, sculpture and Architecture of the past, and consider these in their social, historical, political and cultural contexts. Instruction will be focused exemplifying major works in each period, practicing detailed visual readings in order to better understand their function within the original culture’s context, as well as the impact which they have had on modern Western European and American art. Upon completion students are expected to demonstrate a deep understanding of medieval visual and material culture by presenting their viewpoints and analysis to specific art work or art form in class discussion and assigned writing.
